Street Photography:
Robert Frank:
The Americans is a very famous book which influenced other photographers. The pictures that Robert Frank captured and that were in the book were different to how other people were taking pictures at the time it was published (1958-1959). Robert Frank got a lot of criticism when he first published the book as in the 1950's other photographers took clean, sharp and well exposed pictures. This is why I think that Robert Franks pictures became so famous and inspirational to others. Another reason why I think that his images had such a big impact on other photographers in the 1950's is because he did not think of what other people would think or say about his images.
joel Meyerowitz
Joel Meyerowitz is a well known american street photographer. He started taking pictures in colour in 1962.

Analysis:
WWW:What went well was the way that both of the boys had their coats on their heads. Some people might even think that this picture was planned or that they were trying to hide their faces from the camera. Also I think what went well was that the background is not in focus and the coats are in focus.
|
EBI:I think that this picture could of gone better if the background was more interesting and the boy in the background could of been more to the left so you could see him more.
|
This image works well with the rule of thirds. I chose this image out of the others because I thought it was the closest to the techniques that street photographers use. When you first look at this image it looks like they are trying to hide from the camera with their coats. You can only tell that they are facing the other way by their legs and bags.

Successful Images Evaluation
I like the way this image is composed. I was photographing from a low angle and was able to get quite close to the subject. I like the way the woman's black coat takes up a lot of space in the image and contrasts with the bright orange and red running side to side in the background.
|
I like this man's hat and his expression. Everyone in this picture seems to be waiting for something important to happen. The reflection of the strange building in the background is an added bonus.
|
I like the look of complete surprise in this woman's expression. There are also lovely patches of bright yellow scattered across the surface of the image.
|
Here's another interesting expression. She is attempting to persuade passers by to come into the restaurant. She is trying to sell me something but instead I have taken something from her without her really noticing.

I like these two street pictures of people taking street pictures. The city is full of people carrying cameras - grabbing mementos of their visit. The image on the left almost didn't work because of the motion blur but this is what I really like about it too. It suggests how busy the city is and how quickly I had to react to get the image. A lot of street photography is done by instinct.
I like pictures of people walking towards the camera like this because of their facial expressions. As people are walking towards me they may not see me taking the picture of them as I had the camera low at my waist. If people knew that the pictures were being taken then they react differently as when they do not know that is what I find the most interesting.
I took these pictures close to each other. I stood in the same place and waited for people to pass by. This is a useful technique because the lighting will be the same for a while so you can get a good lighted image all I had to do was wait for a subject to walk past which was not long as it was a busy road and there is constantly people walking up and down.
These four pictures are all about light. I like them because even though they are all to do with light they are still very different, in the first on the light is behind me so this is why I got a good shadow if the bike. Were as in the other one the light was in front of me and this is why I have these light rays are going across the lens.
I decided to edit this one image as I thought that it might look better in black and white. This is the final edited image, I preferred the image in colour. This is because the colours make the image more interesting to look at were as in the black and white image there is not a lot to look at cause of how close up the picture was taken.

Final piece:
This is one of the images I chose out of 300 others. I liked this image because of the shadows, I especially like the shadow of the bike on the floor as it is very clear and easy to see that it is a bike. I decided that I wanted this image to be a big part of my final piece as I found it more interesting than the others. To make this image big I had to divide the image into four and take each section and make it A3. After I had done this I then printed each A3 image off and then cut them and glued them on the board.
